Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 13, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how API to Sheets ("we", "us") handles information in connection with our Google Workspace add-ons (the "Add-ons"), including the API to Sheets Economic Data add-on.
Information we handle
The Add-ons are designed to keep your data in your hands. Specifically:
-
API keys. Any third-party API key you enter (for example, your FRED® API
key) is stored privately in your own Google account using Google Apps Script's per-user
Properties service. It is never written into the spreadsheet, and it is never transmitted to,
or stored on, any API to Sheets server. Because custom functions such as
=FRED()and=FREDTABLE()run as the spreadsheet's owner, those formulas use the key the owner saved; collaborators editing the same spreadsheet can therefore trigger requests that use the owner's stored key. - Add-on settings. Your last-used selections (such as the chosen endpoint, parameters, and output preferences) are stored in the document's Properties service so your settings persist between sessions. These are shared with collaborators on that spreadsheet.
- Spreadsheet content. The Add-ons read your current selection and write requested results into the active spreadsheet only while you use them. We do not copy your spreadsheet contents to our servers.
- Temporary caching. To reduce repeated calls to the third-party API, responses may be cached briefly in the spreadsheet's Apps Script cache (for example, up to a few hours). This cache lives within Google's infrastructure and is not sent to us.
- Licensing data. To enforce free personal vs. paid commercial use, the Add-on stores a non-sensitive account classification (personal or commercial), and, if you purchase a commercial license, your license key and trial start date. These are kept in your Google account / document properties, not on our servers.
Data we do not collect
API to Sheets does not operate a backend server that receives your spreadsheet data or API keys. We do not sell, rent, or share personal data. We do not use your data for advertising. This marketing website itself sets no advertising or tracking cookies.
Third-party services
When you run a query, the Add-on makes requests directly from Google's servers to the relevant third-party API (for example, the FRED® API operated by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis) using the key you provided. Your use of that API is governed by its own terms and privacy practices. See the FRED legal notices.
Permissions we request
The Add-on requests the minimum access needed to work, and only in context. Specifically:
-
See, edit, create, and delete only the current spreadsheet
(
spreadsheets.currentonly) — so the Add-on can read your selection and write results into the spreadsheet you have open. It cannot access your other files. -
Connect to an external service (
script.external_request) — so the Add-on can call the FRED® API on your behalf using your key. -
Display and run a sidebar / menu (
script.container.ui) — so the Add-on can show its sidebar interface inside Google Sheets™. -
See your primary email address (
userinfo.email) — used only to read your account's domain so we can determine whether you qualify for free personal use or require a commercial license. We do not store your email address or use it for any other purpose.
Security
All requests to the third-party API are made over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) and are
restricted to the FRED® API host (api.stlouisfed.org). Your API key and
settings remain within your Google account and Google's infrastructure; we do not operate a
server that receives them.
Google API Services User Data Policy
API to Sheets' use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We only use the access described above to provide the Add-on's user-facing features, and we do not transfer this data to others except as required to provide those features, to comply with applicable law, or to address security or fraud.
Data retention and deletion
Because data is stored within your own Google account (via the Properties service), you can remove a stored API key at any time using the Add-on's sidebar, or by uninstalling the Add-on.
Children's privacy
The Add-ons are not directed to children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
